Spirits of the dead are said to guard an underground cave with a thick iron
door, hidden somewhere on this mountain. The Cave with the Iron Door is said to contain Spanish gold, as well as two hundred
thousand dollars hidden there by Jesse James, and another five hundred thousand dollars hidden by Belle Starr. In the early
1900s two couwboys are said to have stumbled on the iron door, but could not find it when they returned with tools to open
it. Sporadic sitings of the iron door in the side of Elk Mountain have continued for the last eighty years. [Haunted Places,
